Eastern Red Bud is a small tree, usually living less than 30 years, that is covered in the spring with stunning pink blooms. Purely by chance I was given an Eastern red bud "log" several years ago and decided to turn some bowls from it. It was a revelation to see how attractive the sapwood and heartwood were when sanded and finished.
A red bud "log" as large as 8" in diameter is uncommon, so red bud bowls will be small.
These bowls all show great symmetry and balance of sapwood, heartwood, and grain pattern, a goal of every bowl I turn.
Live red bud trees are seldom taken down because the spring bloom is so noteworthy, so it can be several years before I have another to turn.
Red bud shrinks more unevenly than many trees as as it dries, and as many as 25% of the bowls have cracked as they dried.
