When it appears as strong dark lines across a board, ambrosia fungal staining can be quite dramatic (it is an acquired taste). When the staining is light and spread out, it instead is disappointing. Two part A-B wood bleach was used to lighten both the maple wood and the staining.
Amateur photography seldom shows the true color - the result of six or seven applications of the bleach has left the maple somewhat like the color of alabaster.
The bleached color is very striking, but so is the symmetry annd blance of the growth ring patterns in the bottom of the bowl.
